Emotion & Design Zine

I created this zine for a class assignment where the challenge was to use visual communication design to create a compelling argument. The argument I was assigned was that emotion is key to good design.

Right from the start I got excited to explore the idea of my zine folding out into a 8-panel poster, and this form ended up driving a lot of how the design fell into place. I started with illustrating the image of the heart in Adobe Draw by tracing an image of an anatomically correct human heart I found online and then adding shading in Photoshop. Once I felt that the heart image was strong, I began to think about the flow of the argument.

I ultimately wanted the theme of emotional vulnerability to drive the whole piece. I wanted it to be visible not only in the content of the argument but also in its execution. This meant I wanted the case for emotional design to be made vulnerably and personally. This drove me to find personal quotes from artists/creators to use as the content of the argument. I was lucky to find an amazing article called, “How embracing vulnerability can power innovation, creativity and change” on itsnicethat.com that used Brené Brown’s research on the power of vulnerability to take a look at emotion/vulnerability’s role in the creative process.

I loved using Timothy Goodman’s style as a jumping off point for this piece as his work/voice has inspired me for some time now. I was looking to take the elements of his work that inspire me (bold voice, vulnerability, hand-drawn typography, storytelling) and bring those core components to the forefront of the zine while making sure the piece was created using my own voice/style.
